The Monroe Temple of Liberal Judaism

Special Needs (Lehiyot Shayach)

The Lehiyot Shayach committee was formed in the spring of 2007 to raise awareness of the physical and developmental needs of those with disabilities in our congregation, address the special educational needs of children who learn differently and to make every member of the congregation feel welcome…to feel that he or she “belongs” in every sense of the word.   The mission of this committee is to promote a quality Jewish experience for all members of our congregational family as well as addressing their diverse educational and spiritual needs in an inclusive and nurturing environment.

To accomplish these goals, the Lehiyot Shayach committee has teamed with Jewish Family Services of Orange County to establish  the Yeladeinu Program for Jewish children with special disabilities.  The Yeladeinu Program runs a special education Sunday School class, Special Sundays, at  Monroe Temple Beth El.  The program has been  warmly embraced by the congregation. Every child in the class is paired with a teen/peer mentor.  The children are learning the Hebrew alphabet and Jewish holidays, culture and tradition.   Every February, the class celebrates Jewish Disability Month by leading part of a Friday Shabbat Service.

The Lehiyot Shayach Committee has sponsored guest speakers that offer a wide range of information for parents and other adults.  The committee always welcomes new members and ideas to help promote inclusion in our temple.
